Firstly there is the marketing which is essential for having a customer base. After all you need customers for your business to run. When a customer or client (which is a more apt word approaches us with a need, we first of all need to make sure that we understand the client's need. What does he need the illustration for, who are his target customers..? Next we need to think up how to present the illustration or lay it out. Evidently we need creativity here otherwise we will be seriously hampered in this part.
The next step is to draw it out. Obviously this requires artistic skills. After we present the finished we may have corrections and should be prepared for it. The client all the while either had an illustrations in mind or had no idea. If he did have something in mind most often our illustration will not match it. He will then want to make a few changes so he can get his idea out as far as possible. That would mean we have corrections at hand. If the client had not idea in his mind he will have some when he sees the finished product. So some amount of course correction is unavoidable.
To just present a good painting or drawing on to a canvas is passion. But to present someones else' idea is business. So if you have the skill and the creativity and the marketing skills and the communication skills then this is a good business for you.
